Running your Home Business Tips
There are many varieties of home businesses which
people embark on at different times of their lives. Of course
people also have a multitude of motivations but a very common one
is simply being a parent and wanting to be a work
from home mom (or dad). for us it began when we took advantage of the ONE
Group organic business opportunity. Since then we have been
building a home based organic business. During this process we
made many mistakes and have learnt many lessons.
Our business is based on the foundation of MLM
and network marketing.
We have tried to write the tips below more generically so
hopefully they will be of use for a variety of home base businesses.
Prioritise tasks by having clarity on goals.
Start big. Consider what your overall plans and goals are... this
is about identifying your vision, motivation and drive. You need
this bigger picture to help motivate you during those frustrating
and painful times when re joining the salaried work force seems
to be the easiest option. Once you have clarity on the long term
outcome, then you can start to break that down into your required
actions. This approach allows your goals to define your daily actions
and priorities rather than what most people do – just respond to
whatever comes up in their email inbox or lands on their desk.
Use lists
When you identify your tasks work to a list of priorities. Lists
are your friend... one of the most effective ways we have found
is to have a few simple categories then break it down into "important
& urgent", "urgent", "think about sometime".
Keep the drive and motivation
We mentioned this in the context of goals – a key question is
how will you maintain your interest and activity long enough for
your business to begin to work for you.
Create a supportive peer group
You will have to create your own support network. These people
might not even work in the same industry as you but they will have
one thing in common. They will have your best interests at heart
and want to see you succeed. This is no small thing and might time
some time to create but you need people in your corner when times
get challenging.
Define your time – do not work 24/ 7
Part of the challenge of a home business is that it is always
there. At least with a 9 to 5 job you can leave it and go home
to enjoy your freedom and family. This is why you need to be disciplined
about when work ends and rest/ recreation ends. We know some people
who work from home who literally get dressed up, then leave the
house to walk around the block before "starting the days work".
Then they will do this again at the end of the day to mark the
end of their working day.
Now this does not work for us given much
of our work time is squeezed in around our family time... but
this makes it even more important for us to have boundaries. For
example since we both work our business we had had to have rules
such as: "no talking about the business after 10pm" or "no talking
about the business in the bedroom" etc etc. Ultimately this is
about working when you are "at work" and resting when you are "at
rest".
